Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) |
The Milan Cathedral is the most famous tourist spot in Milan and one of the most well known churches in Italy. If you are a Filipino, you might have seen this structure in Piolo Pascual and Claudine Baretto's movie - Milan. This Gothic church was constructed in 1385 with the leadership of Bishop Antonio da Saluzzo and was finished in 1965.
Entrance to the church is free but there are several restrictions on the attire Shorts and skirts above the knees are prohibited for girls. It is open to tourists from 07:00 to 18:00 during weekdays, 09:30-15:30 on Saturdays and 13:30-15:30 on Sundays. Taking pictures is allowed inside the church upon paying 2 euros.
Entrance to the spires costs 7 euros and the ticket can be bought at the right side of the church when you're facing it. From there, you can have a good view of the city and during clear days, even the Alps and Apennines can be seen. It's just a matter of climbing narrow and circular staircases for about 10 minutes and pose no problem to those with fear of heights. Entering the church and climbing the spires will allow you to see the 3159 statues that make up the cathedral. The most famous of them is located at the middle of the roof - the Madonnina (Little Madonna), a statue of the Virgin Mary made from copper and gold.
