Mount Maculot Rockies (706m) Cuenca, Batangas

Mount Maculot is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Southern Luzon.  Last February 2, a new trail opened. It was steeper compared to the old one and a bit more challenging since the soil was still loose and slippery. On our way up, we pass through five buko juice stations. We made sure to buy at least a glass on each station since the vendors were children using the income for their school needs.

After two hours of hiking, we reached the base camp. It had two big nipa huts where guests could eat their lunch. Softdrinks and mineral water could also be bought for P35. Although a lot more expensive than their usual prices, a cold coke was surely appreciated by tired climbers. Considering the effort of bringing all those drinks up to the base camp, the price could be reasonable enough.

After eating our lunch, we resumed our climb to the rockies which was another 10 minutes away from the base camp. It was a steep ascent with great view. Upon reaching the rockies, the mesmerizing view of the Batangas province and Taal Lake wiped our tiredness away. We were blessed to have a clear and sunny weather that enabled us to see the shores and nearby islands. It also gave us an opportunity for endless photo ops.

We decided to start our descent after an hour and a half of enjoying the view. Since we didn’t have to rest, we reached the jump off only an hour after and it gave us a lot of time to freshen up in the nearby house that offered bath for only P20.

How to get there:
Cuenca is a approximately 2.5 hours from Metro Manila. Jam Liners located near GMA Station have Lemery buses that pass through Cuenca town proper. Fare is P155. Upon getting there, ride a tricycle going to the jump-off. Fare is P20 per person. Stop on the registration area and pay P10.

Climbing tips:
A guide is not needed when climbing. Hikers are guided by regular signs along the trail.
